Frequently Asked Questions

What is hypnotherapy?
Hypnosis is a natural, daydream-like state of focused attention where your mind becomes more open to positive change. In hypnotherapy, we use this state alongside therapeutic conversation to work with the subconscious to shift responses that feel stuck, often leading to meaningful insight and lasting change.
Will I lose control during hypnosis?
No. You remain aware and in control at all times. Hypnosis is a cooperative process. I guide you into relaxation, but you decide how deeply to engage. Hypnosis isn’t about losing control; it is about gaining access to your brain’s built-in ability to change.
Is hypnosis safe?
For most people, yes it is, as long as it is done with the help of a Clinical Hypnotherapist. There are contraindications for hypnosis, but these will be picked up during your intake process.

My Approach to Pain Management

When you come to me with pain, we start by listening to your story, understanding where it began and what it means to you.Over time, pain can become amplified by fear, stress, or past experiences.Hypnotherapy offers a safe, effective way to interrupt this cycle and help your body relearn comfort and ease.

Hypnotherapy works by guiding you into a naturally focused state where the mind becomes more open to positive change. In this state, we can gently influence how the brain processes pain, calm the nervous system and promote a sense of control and safety.Research shows that hypnotherapy can reduce pain intensity, improve mood and enhance overall wellbeing.

My work is grounded in the belief that pain always has meaning whether it began as a physical injury, a surgical experience, or emotional distress.Together, we explore that story with curiosity and compassion, helping you to understand what your pain is communicating and how to respond differently.

I integrate approaches from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) to create sessions tailored to your needs. This integrative approach allows us to work with both the conscious and unconscious mind, supporting change that feels natural and lasting. You may begin to notice subtle but meaningful shifts: a sense of calm where there was tension, moments of relief during activities that once felt difficult, or a growing confidence in your body’s ability to feel safe again. Each session builds on the last, supporting you to reconnect with your body’s natural healing resources.

For 19 years I have worked as a paediatric nurse, supporting children, young people and their families through surgery. Over this time, I have come to understand that pain is rarely just a physical experience. Often, there are stories attached to pain that we may not even be consciously aware of. Stories that can shape how pain is felt, how we respond to it and how it influences daily life.Recognising the deep connection between mind and body inspired me to train as a Clinical Hypnotherapist specialising in pain management. I wanted to offer a way of working that not only acknowledges the physical aspects of pain but also gently explores the thoughts, emotions and nervous system responses that can influence it.Hypnotherapy allows me to bring together everything I value, compassion, curiosity and evidence-based practice about care to support meaningful and lasting change. It creates space for clients to understand their pain differently, find relief and reconnect with their body’s natural ability to feel calm and in control.Today, I work with young people and adults to help them manage acute and persistent pain and rediscover comfort, confidence and trust in their own bodies. Where appropriate, I work alongside healthcare providers to ensure care is safe, consistent and fully supported.

I can't wait to start this journey with you!

What is hypnotherapy?
Hypnosis is a natural, daydream-like state of focused attention where your mind becomes more open to positive change. In hypnotherapy, we use this state alongside therapeutic conversation to work with the subconscious—the part of the mind that holds automatic thoughts, patterns, and beliefs. This helps shift responses that feel stuck, often leading to meaningful insight and lasting change.
How do I know if hypnosis is working?
Everyone has a different experience with hypnosis. Try not to judge your experience while it is happening. The results often appear as subtle shifts in how you feel or react to situations after the session.
What if I struggle with visualising? Will it still work?
Yes! Whether you have aphantasia or you sometimes struggle to visualise imagery, hypnosis can still be just as effective for you. You may respond to other senses such as auditory, kinesthetic, olfactory or even gustatory cues. We tailor the language to what you are responsive to.
Can hypnotherapy help with all types of pain?
Yes — whether pain is physical, emotional, or both, hypnotherapy can help reduce intensity, anxiety, and stress around it. I work with clients experiencing chronic pain, functional pain, post-surgical discomfort, and pain influenced by stress or anxiety.
What if I’m receiving medical treatment?
Hypnotherapy can complement medical care but never replaces it. Where appropriate, I’m happy to work alongside your healthcare provider to ensure your care is safe, consistent, and fully supported.
How many sessions will I need?
This depends on your goals and the nature of your pain. Some people notice a difference after one session, while others benefit from a package of several. We’ll discuss what’s right for you during your free 30-minute consultation.
Do you work with children and young people?
Currently I work with those aged 13+. I have over 16 years of experience as a paediatric nurse and am passionate about helping young people manage pain safely and effectively. I also offer standalone sessions for parents who may need support themselves.
Where are sessions held?
Sessions are available online or in person, offering flexibility and comfort wherever you are.
